The Senate voted unanimously to confirm David Shulkin for Secretary of Veterans Affairs on Monday.
Shulkin, previously the undersecretary of the Veterans Health Administration, experienced a smooth confirmation process. Viewed as a bipartisan pick, Shulkin’s confirmation comes after a strong show of support last Tuesday when committee members voted to advance his nomination unanimously.
“The services that are available at the VA are not available in the private sector, and my view of where VA needs to go is an integrated system of care taking the best of VA and the best of the community.”
Prior to the vote, Senator Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.) released a statement expressing her support for the nominee. She said:
“I will vote for Dr. Shulkin (sic) because I am confident he shares my commitment to make sure the VA is providing our nation’s veterans and their families the high quality care they have earned.”
Shulkin’s unanimous confirmation followed the highly debated confirmation of Steve Mnuchin for Treasury Secretary, who passed through the Senate with 53 votes.
